Teeth Cleaning

family-brushing-teethwebThere are essentially two types of cleaning. One is a preventative/prophylactic cleaning that needs to be done once every six (6) months. This is ideally done in those mouths that are free from inflammation. It is done to maintain good oral health.

The second type of cleaning is known as scaling/root planning, therapeutic cleaning or deep cleaning. This is done in areas of chronic inflammation. Areas of inflammation are those areas that have a constant grade of infection caused by bacteria. This is also termed as Gingivitis with its more progressive form being Periodontitis.

By measuring your gum “pocket depths”, Dr. Aditi will determine the extent of your infection and the treatment required. Gum disease or Periodontitis if left unchecked, has been shown according to some studies to directly contribute to Heart Disease. It has also been linked low birth weight in pregnant women and diabetic patients tend to be more susceptible to it.

Gingivitis may be reversible by maintaining oral hygiene and by regular recare appointments, whereas severe Periodontitis is a more chronic condition; its treatment protocol may involve not only scaling/root planning but antibiotic therapy and in severe cases surgery as well.

cosmetic-dentistryIn general both Gingivitis and Periodontitis can be prevented by:

  • Brushing two times a day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Flossing once a day
  • Regular dental check-ups
  • Do not use tobacco or its products
  • Eating a balanced diet

Root Canal Therapy

If decay (cavity) has been left unchecked in a tooth, it can reach the innermost layer of the tooth, called the pulp and the ‘Nerve’ of the tooth. The pain experienced in this situation is because of the nerve dying and the bacteria progressing to the end of the root to reach the blood stream. This is one of the classic indications of the nerve death root canal treatment. There are other ways the nerve can die needing root canal therapy. These can include:

  1. Trauma
  2. Large fillings
  3. Tooth crack or fracture
  4. Deep cavity

These days most root canal treatments can be completed in one visit and most people have commented that it is pain-free, just like getting a routine filling and many even doze off during the procedure.

stock20You will be given local anesthesia for this procedure. If you are particularly anxious during the visit, Dr. Agarwal can also utilize a sedation technique to help make you feel more at ease.

Dr. Agarwal will then remove the source of pain and infection from inside the tooth by thoroughly cleaning each root canal space and filling them with a specialized filling material.

Depending on the degree of infection, there is some amount of soreness associated with the tooth following antibiotic treatment which typically lasts for a few days and can be effectively controlled by over the counter analgesics and/or prescription drugs.

At Avondale Smiles, Dr. Agarwal makes endodontic treatment affordable. Visit our “Office Info” section for information on payment options and plans for your endodontic treatment.

Fillings

In the old days of Dentistry, i.e., for over 100 years, the most commonly used filling material was amalgam with is an alloy of silver, mercury and other small metals.

In recent years; due to the growing health concerns with the use of mercury, there has been a shift in the choice of material being used as filling material. The white or composite filling material is a resin based material that undergoes a polymerization reaction when exposed to special light (UV light) which hardens the material and enables it to be polished giving it a look that is as good as your own natural teeth structure.

The white filling material have become more affordable and is better than old silver fillings as they are bonded to the existing tooth structure rather than compacted thereby reducing the risk of fracture of the tooth with time. They also do not leave unsightly silver stains on the teeth and the surrounding tissues.

Pediatric Dentistry

40Being a Mom herself, Dr. Agarwal knows how important it is to instill good oral hygiene in a child when they are still young. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the first time a child needs to see a Dentist is usually before his/her 1st birthday or when his/her first teeth appear in the mount.

We provide all services for a child including X-rays, exams, cleanings, sealants, Flouride treatment and fillings.

We strive to make our your patients comfortable by having a designated play area for them, a toy box where they can pick out a ‘prize’ for being a good patient and even a ‘star’ status if they become part of our ‘cavity-free’ club.

My goal is to treat, educate and inform both the parents and the children with regards to the changing dentition, the impact of certain oral habits and the ill effects of improper diet and nutrition.

Dr. Agarwal welcomes kids of all ages from Redmond, Bellevue, Woodinville, Kirkland, Duvall and Carnation. At Avondale Smiles we also extend our special invitation to kids from our neighboring schools: Einstein Elementary, Mann Elementary, Rockwell Elementary, Wilder Elementary, Redmond Elementary, Redmond Junior High, Evergreen Junior High and last but not the least Redmond High School.

Full and Partial Dentures

Full Dentures

Complete dentures are those that replace all missing teeth in either the upper or the lower arch of the jaw. Complete dentures can be of two types:

  1. Conventional dentures are those dentures that are fabricated after removal of all teeth and after healing is complete.
  2. Immediate dentures are those that are given the same day as when the teeth are extracted. Most immediate dentures have to be relined as they do not fit well a couple of months later due to changes in the bone following healing.

Partial Dentures

29Partial dentures are of 3 basic types:

  1. Cast partial denture includes a metal framework for strength. It is used to replace one of more missing teeth in either upper or lower arch.
  2. Full resin denture or also called as VALPLAST. These are completely resin based dentures used to replace teeth mainly in the esthetic zone. These dentures are more flexible compared to the above.
  3. Interim partial dentures or flipper. These dentures are placed as an intermediate to more permanent treatment and it can be used in most situations to replace missing teeth.

Most dentures take about 4-6 weeks to be fabricated. The patient needs to come back for multiple appointments.

It is advised to remove all dentures at night and clean them with a toothbrush and toothpaste and/or use a denture cleanser. Teeth supporting a partial denture also need to be thoroughly cleaned by brushing and flossing.

Dr. Aditi Agarwal welcomes anyone needing either a full or a partial denture for a consult to see what she can do for you. At Avondale Smiles we offer flexible options to help finance your new dentures.

Crowns and Bridges

A crown is a type of dental restoration that completely encircles a tooth. Crowns are usually fabricated indirectly in a lab. There are made of different material. The most commonly used crown material are:

  1. Porcelain fused to metal
  2. All Porcelain
  3. Full gold

The indications for a crown usually involve endodontically treated teeth or in other words, teeth that have had a root canal treatment. Other indications are teeth with broken or fractured cusps and teeth with large fillings that are not strong enough to withstand normal biting forces.

Bridge is usually indicated to replace single/multiple teeth in one arch. In this case, the tooth behind and in front of the missing teeth are crowned.

Longevity of a crown or bridge is dependent on the person’s oral hygiene, frequency of dental visits, overall carries risk and general health condition. Most crown and bridgework typically lasts up to 10 years.

Veneers

Veneers can straighten. Lengthen or whiten teeth to provide your desired smile. A veneer is thin porcelain restoration that is bonded to a prepared tooth. Veneers usually covers the visible part of a tooth and have become very popular due to their simplicity and versatility. They give the best esthetic results compared to other restorations especially in the anterior area.
